40 years ago, IBC SOLAR started with a revolutionary vision at the time: We wanted to give everyone easy access to the infinite energy of the sun – for a world worth living in. And we continue to carry this vision in our hearts. As one of the first providers of battery and photovoltaic systems, we have actively facilitated many changes in the industry. It is time to look back on our milestones and, of course, to look ahead to a sunny future for all of us.

Our founder Udo Möhrstedt was already focusing on the future back in 1992. He converted a handful of VW Polos to electric drive. Some of them are still on the road today and make the story of e-mobility tangible. However, a few challenges still need to be overcome for a comprehensive mobility revolution, and photovoltaics will play an important role in the future.

Our company's 40-year history has seen the creation of many great solar systems of all sizes and in many different countries. Here we give a brief overview of some of our oldest, largest, most beautiful and extraordinary systems and hear to what our partners and customers have to say.
The Gut Leimershof solar park (Germany) has an output of 13.8 MWp and saves approx. 7,500 tonnes of climate-damaging CO2. With its electricity production, it supplies around 4,450 households with energy each year.

The Grand Palladium Resort & Spa, a five-star hotel in the Jamaican parish of Hanover, initiated the solar revolution in the Caribbean.
Since 2014, a photovoltaic system with a capacity of 1.6 MW on the roofs of the hotel complex has provided the resort with the majority of its power.
In 2007, we built the Großbardorf citizen solar park with predominantly regional participation. The system produces approx. 25.6 million kWh of electricity and can therefore supply 7,000 households with energy. Even after the end of the Renewable Energgy Act subsidy, the powerplant will continue to be operated and contribute to the energy self-sufficient municipality of Großbardorf (Germany).
"70 percent more than calculated! This is the result of the system in Großbardorf! I am proud to have been involved in this project since 2005. The forecast for the payout until 2021 was 1.9 million euros! Today we are at a total of 3.23 million euros. A real success!"
The first rooftop system in Bad Staffelstein (Germany) has been running reliably for 30 years now. The 1.2 kWp system continuously supplies power and the 24 narrow Siemens modules only have low power losses.
"This year our PV plant celebrated its 30th year in operation. During this time, it has generated around 28,000 kWh of solar power and continues to run perfectly. That’s why we continue to use it after the feed-in tariff has expired – however now, for our self-consumption."
In order to demonstrate that solar energy is infinite, 19 solar wheels were installed at the Spielfeld border crossing in Austria in 1991.
Each received its own PV module and the electricity generated made the solar wheels rotate. Art and technology have combined to create a harmonious whole with symbolic effects.
Back in 1993, we equipped a bus station in Oberstdorf (Germany) with a 19 kWp system and 360 photovoltaic modules. The system acted as a solar filling station, as the electricity generated was fed into the public grid of the Oberstdorf electrical works, from which the batteries of the electric buses of the city traffic were charged if necessary.
Thus, about one third of the electricity demand of the electric buses could be provided by photovoltaics. Even back then, solar power was part of the environmentally friendly transport concept of the spa resort.
The roof installation on an industrial building in Ciudad Real (Spain) consists of a total of 4,172 IBC SOLAR modules and covers an area of a medium-sized football field.
The system produces around 1.4 gigawatt hours of environmentally friendly photovoltaic electricity per year.
In 1993, this small 2.2 kWp plant was built in Austria near Salzburg.
The PV system which was installed in 2013 on an industrial building belonging to carwash manufacturer Istobal generates approx. 2.8 million kilowatt hours per year.
This means that the system can supply 860 families or 25% of the population of L'Alcúdia (Spain).
In 1992, we installed a small 1 kWp system with 36 modules at the Landesgartenschau in Ingolstadt (Germany).
Learning with solar power: In 2002, we equipped the E.T.A. Hoffmann Gymnasium school in Bamberg (Germany) with a 32 kWp rooftop system.
Long-standing customer Miroslav Gutsalo is delighted with how well the system at his parents’ house in Bulgaria works, even after 10 years.
Very popular at the time, but since discontinued, the IBC Servemaster inverter is still in use. Mirsolav now works in Varna for our partner Glorious Light.
Almost 20 years ago, we equipped the roofs of Stadtwerke Aachen (Germany) with PV modules.
The system had a total output of 52 kWp and was one of the first larger commercial solar systems.
In 2009, we built an 8 MWp solar park in 2009 on the site of a former Russian artillery and infantry barracks in Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). This provided the fallow military area with a meaningful new purpose - environmentally friendly electricity generation.
"Working together to solve the problems up to the start of construction was the basis for a successful implementation. The project is also particularly memorable because there has never been such a smooth process in projects with other investors until my retirement in 2015."
The photoltaic hybrid system supplies clean solar power to the research station of the Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF) on the paradisiac Atoll Aldabra. The 12-strong SIF team is mainly dedicated to exploring and preserving the coral reef which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982.
Great for the environment, because the research station now saves 99% on diesel. A rare giant Seychelles turtle also stopped by when the plant was being built.
Despite its northern location, the historic small town of Grimmen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany) has high irradiation values. Our 6.2 MWp solar park is built on a former clay mound. The site was no longer suitable for agricultural use or residential construction.
Thanks to the solar park, the soil now has time to regenerate and can then be used for other purposes again.
The solar park in the province of Udine (Italy) covers an area of 32 hectares and was sold to Allianz in 2011. As a general contractor, IBC SOLAR took over the planning and project development as well as the approval formalities for the major project.
IBC SOLAR is still servicing and maintaining the PV powerplant today.
In 2011 we installed a 2 MW PV system for a customer directly next to the runway at Düsseldorf airport (Germany).
The aim was to reduce the airports CO2 footprint.
The approximately 500 inhabitants of Douar Arzan, a village at the foot of the Atlas Mountains (Morocco), have to fight for every drop of water in the summer. Until 2012, water was pumped from a well over a distance of 150 metres into an elevated tank using a diesel generator. We then installed 20 IBC SOLAR modules with a special mounting system for the mountain slope, which is made up of shale, sand and rock.
The PV system now supplies enough power to run the water pump independently. With the course of the sun, it extracts around 22 cubic metres of water per day, with a head of 150 metres. Families from two villages can now get their supplies from the water reserve as required.
In 2014, one of the largest photovoltaic systems of the time was created in Poland in the brand-new Ost-West design, with an output of 237 kWp. Nearly 1,000 solar modules on the roof supply the Institute of Dentistry of the Central Clinical Hospital in Łód with green energy.
In the same year, IBC SOLAR won the Intersolar Award for this revolutionary system design for optimising self-consumption.
The As Galegas (Portugal) solar powerplant has a nominal power output of 2.3 MWp. To achieve this, 9,600 IBC PolySol 240MS polycrystalline modules were installed.
With an estimated annual production of 3,500 MWh, the photovoltaic powerplant can supply around 1,500 families with clean electricity, thereby saving around 1,640 tonnes of environmentally harmful CO2 emissions.
