The owner's vision is to develop the property into a destination where wheelchair users can enjoy every aspect of the environment with confidence and independence.

Having experienced first-hand the challenges of finding truly accessible accommodation, the client wanted to create a destination where accessibility is not an afterthought but forms part of every design decision.

Supporting that vision required a reliable and resilient energy solution capable of operating independently from the national grid while supporting the property’s current operations and future development.

 

Why a Fully Off-Grid Solution?

Although grid-connected systems are often the preferred option, every project should begin with evaluating the client's objectives and site constraints.

For Blue Sabaku, a fully off-grid solution offered significant advantages.

A conventional SSEG application would have resulted in the property moving onto Eskom's RuralFlex tariff while also limiting the allowable PV system size based on the existing transformer capacity.

By designing a fully off-grid solution, the client was able to:

  • Maintain complete energy independence
  • Avoid future tariff implications
  • Install a system sized according to actual energy requirements
  • Create a scalable platform for future expansion
  • Improve long-term operational resilience

The result is an energy solution designed around the client's needs rather than grid limitations.

Engineering Around Site Conditions

Every project presents unique engineering challenges.

At Blue Sabaku, rocky ground conditions made conventional pile-driven foundations impractical.

To overcome this, the project team designed an above-surface in-situ concrete ballast foundation system for the Schletter FS Duo mounting structures.

This approach provided a stable and consistent engineered foundation for the mounting structures while eliminating the need for deep excavation and providing a stable, engineered foundation without the need for deep excavation.

 

System Overview

The completed system includes:

  • 106.8 kWp ground-mounted PV array
  • 240 × IBC SOLAR 445 W bifacial modules
  • Schletter FS Duo mounting system
  • 15 × Solar MD 16 kWh rack-mounted batteries
  • 12 × Victron MultiPlus-II 15 kVA inverter/chargers
  • 125 kW Sungrow PV inverter

Together, these technologies provide reliable off-grid power capable of supporting the client's current and future energy requirements.
