Navigating Compliance and Sustainability in South Africa’s Solar Landscape

As South Africa continues to embrace solar energy, the recent warning from Eskom regarding homeowners with rooftop solar installations highlights the importance of regulatory compliance. The power utility has made it clear that all grid-tied solar PV systems must be registered, and those who fail to comply could face fines. This development underscores a critical reality: compliance is not just a bureaucratic hurdle but a fundamental step toward a sustainable and secure energy future.

Eskom’s 12.7% Tariff Hike: What It Means for the Solar Industry

From April 2025, Eskom will implement a 12.7% electricity tariff increase, followed by 5.36% in 2026 and 6.19% in 2027—a compounded 26% increase over three years. Municipalities, which typically adjust their tariffs in July, often introduce even higher increases than Eskom’s.

For South Africans, this means electricity costs will continue to rise, placing further financial pressure on businesses and households. While interest rates have seen a slight decrease and inflation is stabilising, the cost of energy remains a growing concern.
